Additional tips ✔

To make the most of your stay in Stockholm, consider these additional tips on getting around, saving money on accommodations, and the best time to visit.

Getting around Stockholm 🚇

Stockholm has an efficient and extensive public transportation system, making it easy to explore the city. Options include:

  • Tunnelbana (T-bana): Stockholm’s metro system, with three main lines (green, red, and blue)
  • Buses: A comprehensive network of bus routes covering the city and suburbs
  • Trams: Serving Djurgården and other areas not covered by the metro
  • Ferries: Connecting the city center with the archipelago and islands like Djurgården and Skeppsholmen

Consider purchasing an SL Access card, which allows unlimited travel on public transport for a set period (24 hours, 72 hours, or 7 days).

Saving money on accommodations 💸

Stockholm is known for being an expensive city, but there are ways to save money on accommodations:

  • Book in advance: Prices tend to be lower when booking early, especially during peak season
  • Stay in budget-friendly areas: Södermalm and Vasastan offer more affordable options compared to the city center
  • Consider hostels or Airbnb: Hostels like City Backpackers or Generator Stockholm offer budget-friendly dorm rooms, while Airbnb has a range of apartments and rooms for rent
  • Look for package deals: Some hotels and airlines offer package deals that can save you money on your overall trip

Best time to visit 🍁

The best time to visit Stockholm depends on your preferences and priorities:

Summer (June-August)

  • Pros: Warm weather, long days, and opportunities for outdoor activities.
  • Cons: High prices, crowds, and occasional rain.

Fall (September-November)

  • Pros: Mild weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful autumn colors.
  • Cons: Shorter days and some attractions may be closed.

Winter (December-February)

  • Pros: Christmas markets, winter sports, and cozy cafes.
  • Cons: Cold temperatures, limited daylight, and some attractions closed.

Spring (March-May)

FAQs about Visiting Stockholm ❔

Where should I stay for the first time in Stockholm?

For your first visit to Stockholm, I’d recommend staying in the Gamla Stan (Old Town) area. This historic neighborhood on an island in central Stockholm puts you right in the heart of the city. You’ll be surrounded by charming medieval architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and lively plazas. It’s an atmospheric place to experience Stockholm’s old-world charm up close.

How many days in Stockholm is enough?

I’d suggest spending at least 3-4 days in Stockholm to get a good taste of the city. With 3 days, you can see the highlights of Gamla Stan, visit a few museums like the Vasa Museum or Skansen open-air museum, take a boat tour through the archipelago, and explore neighborhoods like trendy Södermalm. If you have 4 days, you could add a day trip to the scenic archipelago islands or the historic city of Uppsala.

Where not to stay in Stockholm?

While Stockholm is generally a very safe city, there are a couple areas I’d avoid staying in, especially for first-time visitors. Rinkeby and Tensta in the northwestern suburbs have higher crime rates and can feel a bit isolated and gritty compared to central areas. Parts of Södertälje, about 20 miles southwest of the city center, also have a reputation for higher crime.

Can you get around Stockholm without a car?

Absolutely! Stockholm has an excellent public transportation system that makes getting around without a car very doable. The tunnelbana (metro/subway), buses, trams, commuter trains, and ferries form an integrated network that can get you virtually anywhere in the city and suburbs. The metro in particular is efficient and covers a wide area.

Is it good to live in Stockholm?

From my perspective, Stockholm seems like a wonderful place to call home – though of course, no city is perfect. On the plus side, it’s an extremely clean, safe, and eco-friendly capital with beautiful architecture and easy access to nature via parks and the archipelago islands. The economy is strong, the education system is excellent, and there’s a vibrant cultural scene. However, the cost of living is quite high, even by European standards.
