When planning your trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast, you have several transportation options to choose from, each with its own advantages and considerations. Let’s explore the main ways to get from Rome to Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and other popular destinations along the coast.

  1. Private Transfer: 4 hours, from €600 (for up to 3 passengers) Show transfer

If you are short on time, I recommend going to the Amalfi Coast as part of a tour. This way you will get the maximum amount of impressions and save your energy and nerves.

If you plan to spend a few days on the coast, here are our top hotels:

Any of the above methods I recommend booking in advance. In high season, prices are often raised and the number of offers is greatly reduced.

1. Amalfi coast by Train from Rome

There are 2 ways:

1. With a connection in Naples

Rome to Naples: Start your journey by taking a high-speed train from Rome’s Termini Station to Naples’ Centrale Station. Trains such as Frecciarossa and Italo run frequently and the trip takes about 1-1.5 hours.
From Naples to Sorrento or Salerno: From Naples, you can take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, which takes about 1 hour. You can also take a regional train from Naples to Salerno, which is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, and the travel time is about 1 hour.

2. By direct train
There is a direct flight from Rome to Salerno from Italo. You can choose a more suitable option and book online.

Remember, in high season prices for accommodation and transportation go up a lot. So I recommend booking as early as possible to get the best price.

3. Car Rental

I only recommend this option for those who are planning a long trip around Italy. It is not worth using this way just to get to Amalfi, as there will be difficulties with the parka in high season.

Driving from Rome to the Amalfi Coast: Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace and make stops along the way. The drive from Rome to the Amalfi Coast takes around 3-4 hours, depending on your destination and traffic conditions.

4. Bus

  1. Direct buses from Rome to the Amalfi Coast: Several bus companies, such as Marozzi and FlixBus, offer direct services from Rome to the Amalfi Coast towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Sorrento. These buses depart from Rome’s Tiburtina station and take approximately 4-5 hours, depending on the destination.
  2. Pros and cons of bus travel: While buses offer a convenient and direct option, they may be subject to traffic delays and can be less comfortable than trains. However, they often provide scenic views along the route and can be a cost-effective choice.

When choosing your transportation method from Rome to the Amalfi Coast, consider factors like budget, travel time, convenience, and your desired level of flexibility. Whether you opt for a train, bus, car rental, or private transfer, you’ll be on your way to experiencing the enchanting beauty of the Amalfi Coast.
